The purpose of this resource is to explain MAP and to provide examples of effective math lessons and assessment tools for 6th grade through high school students. One of the goals of MAP is to teach and assess math in a way that presents the material in different ways and requires students to use their knowledge in various contexts, but also meets the demands of the Common Core State Standards. I think I would use MAP as a teacher because it incorporates cooperative work among students, problem solving, concept development, and learning through questioning and discussion. I think that students can learn about their own thinking when they reflect on their strategies used and teachers can guide this type of reflective thinking through questioning. This web resource provides a good framework for teaching math and ways to effectively assess students, which will answer some questions about teaching math. For example, one question I had about teaching and learning math is, “how should I respond as a teacher in order to improve the student’s learning in math? “ This website explains how teachers can use formative assessment and quality feedback to help students reconsider their own thinking, strategies used, and their reasoning. Through formative assessments, teachers are able to help students learn because they know where the students are at in terms of development of knowledge and skills and they are able to decide whether to move forward in a lesson or reteach a specific area. This website would help me gain more knowledge about teaching because it provides specific examples of teaching mathematics in the classroom. Also, this website explains why teachers should use questioning to improve learning and gives examples of problem solving lessons. The most interesting aspect of this resource was the videos that were provided under each module. These videos provided various examples of effective teaching in the classroom and different strategies teachers can use to improve student learning. For example, one video showed how teachers can use mini-whiteboards in the classroom both as a formative assessment and to encourage active student participation throughout the lesson. The videos were very interesting because they offered very practical methods teachers can use in the classroom. I would recommend this to fellow teachers because I think that this website is geared more towards teachers and offers many wonderful ideas that teachers can use to more effectively teach mathematics in a way that is student-centered and also meets the Common Core State Standards. Also, this resource would be beneficial for teachers because there are sample lessons and activities that they can view and adapt to use with their own students.
